{"id":18087,"date":"2021-08-24T10:02:32","date_gmt":"2021-08-24T08:02:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bonpote.com\/the-ipcc-report-for-parents-and-teachers\/"},"modified":"2022-07-02T18:36:14","modified_gmt":"2022-07-02T16:36:14","slug":"the-ipcc-report-for-parents-and-teachers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bonpote.com\/en\/the-ipcc-report-for-parents-and-teachers\/","title":{"rendered":"The IPCC report for parents and teachers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This is what Val\u00e9rie-Masson Delmotte declared <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?t=4495&amp;v=z149vLKn9d8&amp;feature=youtu.be\">at the press conference<\/a> for the release of the new IPCC Group 1 report on August 9, 2021:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>&#8220;We would like for the entire report to contribute to improving climate knowledge worldwide, for it to be used globally in education, so that teenagers and students can acquire the latest and best knowledge available.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Roger that!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bonpote.com\/en\/synthesis-and-analysis-of-the-new-ipcc-report\/\">An article has already been written<\/a> to summarize the documents of the SPM (Summary for Policy Makers) and of the TS (Technical Summary). However, the vocabulary used in these syntheses is not always accessible. Indeed, in spite of the IPCC&#8217;s best communication efforts, the summaries can prove a bit difficult to read. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hence this &#8216;general public&#8217; version, which is what I would have liked to read when I first started. This version is meant to be accessible to everyone, regardless of one\u2019s level of study. Teachers and professors will also be able to use this material, in order to explore these crucial subjects for our future with their pupils and students. <strong>It is the first time in history that a scientific report holds \u2014 and will continue to hold \u2014 such sway in the scientific, political, geopolitical and economic realms. <\/strong> This requires the attention of each and everyone, as well as a little bit of work to make it accessible&#8230; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This article is divided into three main sections:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What is the IPCC<\/li><li>The key takeaways from the report<\/li><li>Analyzing climate change and its possible evolutions and consequences<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly, the article includes a bonus section featuring infographics, which you can save, share, print&#8230; anything you might need to get the message across!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-what-is-the-ipcc\">1\/ What is the IPCC<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was established in 1988 to provide comprehensive assessments of the state of scientific, technical and socio-economic knowledge about climate change, its causes, potential impacts and response strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>The IPCC is not an association of individuals, but an association of countries:<\/strong> Its members are nations, not individuals. The people who sit in the IPCC assemblies only represent member countries.<\/li><li><strong>The IPCC is completely transparent<\/strong>, everything is available on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/languages-2\/francais\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the website<\/a>: How the authors are selected, the documents they base their research on, how the reports are approved, etc.<\/li><li>The IPCC is not <strong>a research laboratory<\/strong>. It is an organization that assesses and synthesizes the research that is produced in laboratories around the world.<\/li><li>There are 3 main working groups and a Task Force:<ul><li>The first report (which is studied here) deals with the physical understanding of the climate system and of climate change.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/bonpote.com\/en\/33-billion-people-exposed-to-climate-change-the-new-ipcc-report-is-without-appeal\/\">The second will address the impact of, and the adaptation and vulnerability of human societies and ecosystems to climate change<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/bonpote.com\/en\/new-ipcc-report-action-will-cost-less-than-business-as-usual\/\">The third will address global solutions to mitigate climate change and its effects<\/a> . Groups 2 and 3 are scheduled to approve their reports in February and March 2022. The synthesis report is scheduled to be published in September 2022.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>The IPCC does not make recommendations, only projections.<\/strong><\/li><li>The IPCC synthesizes all scientific papers, provided that the research has been <a href=\"https:\/\/bonpote.com\/peer-review-et-publications-scientifiques-definition-et-limites\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">peer-reviewed<\/a> in a scientific journal.<\/li><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Each line of the summary for policy makers is validated by a delegate, who represents a country<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The key takeaways from the report <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are the key takeaways that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/ar6\/wg1\/downloads\/report\/IPCC_AR6_WGI_Headline_Statements.pdf\">the IPCC has put forward<\/a> in its Summary fo Policymakers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\"><strong>The current state of the climate<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A.1 <strong>There is no longer any doubt<\/strong>: Humans are warming the atmosphere, the oceans and the land. These changes are widespread and quick.<br>A.2 The magnitude of the current climate changes has not been observed for centuries, if not for thousands of years.<br>A.3 The evidence for human (or anthropogenic) responsibility for heat waves, torrential rains, droughts and tropical storms is far stronger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\">Possible climate futures<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>B.1 Temperatures will continue to rise until at least 2050, but <strong>a warming of 2\u00b0C or even 1.5\u00b0C compared to pre-industrial era levels can still be avoided if we reduce greenhouse gas emissions sharply and vigorously.<\/strong><br>B.2 As the planet becomes warmer, there will be an increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme heat episodes on land and in the oceans; heavy rainfall; drought in some regions; tropical storms, and a decrease in Arctic sea ice, snow cover and permafrost.<br>B.3 Globally, monsoons will go to greater extremes between humidity and drought.<br>B.4 If CO2 emissions continue to rise, the oceans and the land will be less and less able to absorb it.<br>B.5 Some impacts will be irreversible for thousands of years, such as melting ice caps and rising sea levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\">Climate information for regional risk assessment and adaptation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>C.1 Natural climate events such as El Ni\u00f1o and La Ni\u00f1a will continue to have some small-scale impact on some regions, but overall will have little impact on the long-term trend of global warming.<br>C.2 The<strong>impacts will be greater with a warming of 2\u00b0C<\/strong> , than with a warming of +1.5\u00b0C. In other words, <strong>every avoidable fraction of a degree matters<\/strong>.<br>C.3 Even if the collapse of the ice caps and ocean circulations is unlikely to occur by 2100, the possibility of this happening should not be ignored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\">Limiting future climate change<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>D.1 <strong>To stop global warming, we must at least achieve CO2 neutrality and significantly reduce emissions of other greenhouse gases.<\/strong><br><strong>D.2 A rapid and abrupt reduction in greenhouse gases can quickly lead to a more stable climate, as well as to improved air quality.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"> <span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">Analyzing climate change and its possible evolutions and consequences<\/span> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The new IPCC report includes great infographics, especially the ones featured in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/ar6\/wg1\/downloads\/report\/IPCC_AR6_WGI_SPM.pdf\">summary for policy makers<\/a>. These maps\/infographics help visualize how the climate has evolved and how it may change as a result of our emissions. Here are some of them (non exhaustive list).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"715\" height=\"444\" src=\"https:\/\/bonpote.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/SPM-FIG.1-AR6-WG1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18317\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bonpote.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/SPM-FIG.1-AR6-WG1.jpg 715w, https:\/\/bonpote.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/SPM-FIG.1-AR6-WG1-300x186.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bonpote.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/SPM-FIG.1-AR6-WG1-288x180.jpg 288w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 715px) 100vw, 715px\" \/><figcaption><em>Figure SPM.1<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>One quick look at the <strong>SPM.1 Figure<\/strong> shows that the rate of global warming is &#8216;unprecedented&#8217;. The graph on the right (which is a close-up of the figure on the left, from 1850 to the present), allows to visualize what happens when one changes scales. We can clearly see that we have reached about 1.1 to 1.2\u00b0C of warming compared to pre-industrial levels, which cannot be explained by natural causes alone (in blue).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"741\" height=\"618\" src=\"https:\/\/bonpote.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Figure-SPM.2-WG1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18337\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bonpote.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Figure-SPM.2-WG1.jpg 741w, https:\/\/bonpote.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Figure-SPM.2-WG1-300x250.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 741px) 100vw, 741px\" \/><figcaption> Figure SPM.2 <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>FIGURE SPM.2<\/strong><\/span> : <strong>Understanding <a href=\"https:\/\/bonpote.com\/en\/radiative-forcing-the-basis-for-climate-change\/\">radiative forcing<\/a> is very important when trying to figure out what is causing global warming, and how science accounts for it<\/strong>. This is a 101 and I highly recommend that you dedicate a few minutes of your time to it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here we see the error bars (margins) in action. This shows that scientists take uncertainty into account, which is a key element when one ventures to read an IPCC report (and\/or any scientific report). What does this mean?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An exceptionally unlikely scenario where all human influences would be at the bottom of their error bars and all natural influences would be at the top of theirs<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">would not be enough to explain global warming<\/span><\/strong>. This is why scientists can afford to say &#8220;<strong>unequivocal<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"645\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/bonpote.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/SPM3-WG1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18347\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bonpote.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/SPM3-WG1.jpg 645w, https:\/\/bonpote.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/SPM3-WG1-252x300.jpg 252w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 645px) 100vw, 645px\" \/><figcaption> SPM Fig.3<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">SPM.3 Figure<\/span><\/strong>: Here is an infographic that shows <strong>how likely a region is to be affected<\/strong><strong>by a given extreme meteorological event<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The IPCC also points out that &#8220;<strong>natural factors and internal variability will modulate human-induced changes, especially on regional and short-term scales, with little effect on centennial climate warming<\/strong>.&#8221; It is crucial to factor in these modulations when planning for all possible changes, including risk management. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bonpote.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/SRL-image-10-1024x800.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18339\" width=\"633\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bonpote.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/SRL-image-10-1024x800.png 1024w, https:\/\/bonpote.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/SRL-image-10-300x234.png 300w, https:\/\/bonpote.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/SRL-image-10-768x600.png 768w, https:\/\/bonpote.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/SRL-image-10-1536x1200.png 1536w, https:\/\/bonpote.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/SRL-image-10.png 2032w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 633px) 100vw, 633px\" \/><figcaption> SPM Figure 10<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">SPM.10 Figure<\/span><\/strong>: This figure illustrates the most important dimension of the report: <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">each ton emitted contributes to global warming<\/span><\/strong>.
